Destination: Adirondack Mountains, NY
– Camping at Lewey Lake, Adirondack Mountains –
June of 2012 Devin and I spent three days and two nights camping at Lewey Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. June is the best time of the year to visit the Adirondacks, the temperatures are mild, warm and sunny by day and cool but not freezing at night, the trees are full of lush green leaves, and it isn’t overly crowded.
We arrived in the late evening, too late to go with our original plan of camping on the islands of Indian Lake, canoeing with all of our gear in the dark didn’t seem like a good idea, so we settled on Lewey Lake Campground. The campground is situated right between Lewey and Indian Lakes, in the center of Adirondack Mountain National Park, and has about 200 campsites.
The campground was empty, there were probably 20 other people there, but plenty of mosquitos. The next morning after breakfast we walked down to the lake and rented a canoe.
Canoeing. Not what I anticipated.
I mean I knew it would be work and not a leisurely relaxing day on the lake, but what I wasn’t prepared for was Devin sitting backwards, and us spending an hour going nowhere zigzagging around. We looked like total amateurs, we were facing one another on the canoe! So I carefully maneuvered myself, out on the open lake, to face the other direction, which still wasn’t right. The space for my legs was so tight, they were smashed into a tiny cubby banging against a metal bar, I kept telling Devin that there was no way I was supposed to be facing that way, but for whatever reason it never crossed our minds that Devin was sitting the wrong way and maybe he should be the one to turnaround. (he had his legs thrown over the metal bar that is supposed to support your back and thought nothing of it).
We finally gave up and rented a motor boat instead. And let me tell you that is totally the way to go. For an extra $40 we were able to sit back and relax out on the lake (you can rent a canoe for $20 or a boat for $75).
We were able to explore the entire lake that day, something we never would have been able to do in the canoe, and it was gorgeous.
We had such a good time in the Adirondacks and I want to go back again during the fall foliage, I can only imagine how beautiful the scenery looks during the fall! And there are so many different lakes, cabins and campgrounds that we still have a ton left to explore!
